On Monday 24 October at 13.45 local time IFE Halden experienced an accidental release of radioactive iodine. Today, IFE has switched off the ventilation system in the reactor hall, such that emissions to the environment are minimized.
Elevated radiation levels are still being measured within the reactor hall.
IFE are still working to assess the situation and identify the cause of the leak. The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) has sent a team of personnel to carry out measurements and clarify radioactivity levels around the plant.
Based on information NRPA has received from IFE, our assessment is that the discharge will not have any impact on people or the environment.
IFE estimates the amount of radioactive iodine that has been released into the environment is 5-8% of the amount of radioactive iodine IFE has permission to release annually.
