This report presents results of monitoring of radioactivity in sea water, sediment and biota collected in Norwegian waters in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The potential effects of climate change scenarios on potential dispersal of contaminants from the Komsomolets submarine was explored for points along the northern Norwegian coast.

The current report is a result of the first joint WG Nordic-Nat activity related to NORM, and it provides an overview of national legislations, regulatory approaches and practices concerning NORM across Nordic countries i.e., Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

A 2019 Norwegian research cruise to the sunken nuclear submarine Komsomolets has confirmed that radioactive releases from the reactor are still occurring. These releases have had little impact on the surrounding marine environment. The research cruise detected specific uranium and plutonium isotopes which suggest that the nuclear fuel assemblies have been damaged and that the nuclear fuel is in direct contact with seawater and deteriorating. Further work should be carried out to understand any corrosion processes and their implications.
