The removal of RTGs around the Baltic Sea was initiated in 2009 as part of the Norwegian-Russian cooperation with funding from Norway, which requires that risk and environmental impact assessments are carried out during the planning phase.

A 2019 Norwegian research cruise to the sunken nuclear submarine Komsomolets has confirmed that radioactive releases from the reactor are still occurring. These releases have had little impact on the surrounding marine environment. The research cruise detected specific uranium and plutonium isotopes which suggest that the nuclear fuel assemblies have been damaged and that the nuclear fuel is in direct contact with seawater and deteriorating. Further work should be carried out to understand any corrosion processes and their implications.

Statens strålevern sammen med strålevernsmyndigheten i Romania og det internasjonale atomenergibyrået IAEA har inngått en avtale med hovedformål å øke tilsynsmyndighets-kompetansen i Romania.

This report presents the results obtained in 2006-2015 by the «Joint Norwegian-Russian monitoring programme of radioactive contamination in the northern areas». The report has been written by the current working group for the monitoring programme under the Joint Norwegian-Russian Expert Group for investigation of radioactive contamination in the northern areas.

With the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority has developed projects on a bilateral basis with the aim of assisting the regulatory bodies in Central Asian countries identify gaps in the regulatory framework and draft relevant regulatory requirements to ensure the protection of personnel, the public and the environment during the planning and conducting of remedial action with regard to past practices and measures for radioactive waste management.
